I dreamed of a milkweed highway

There were milkweeds on all sides

The purple buds blossomed in the sun

Then came the monarch butterflies

There were orange wings so far as I could see

From the meadows to the sky

I watched them fly

The monarchs laid all their eggs

Underneath the milkweed leaves

The caterpillars grew until they somehow knew

A chrysalis they should weave

Once inside they began to change

When they came out they soared so high

I watched them fly

The monarchs became homesick

And started to fly south

The milkweed pods grew so full of seeds

That the seeds finally burst out

The sailed away on their silken wings

All along milkweed highway

I watched them fly
